Chartered in 1967, the IAFF Local 1742 represents the professional firefighters, paramedics, and fire inspectors of the Baltimore-Washington International Airport Fire Rescue Department. The Local 1742 works to maintain equitable and peaceful resolutions in the workplace and protect its members’ wages, hours, rights, and working conditions. Since its inception, the Local 1742 has worked with the State of Maryland to provide the best response and patient care possible not only to BWI Airport, but surrounding jurisdictions as well, when needed.
While members of the Local 1742 are first to respond to all emergencies at BWI Airport, they can regularly be seen responding to Anne Arundel County, Howard County, Prince George’s County, Baltimore County, and the City of Baltimore. Our members comprise an “all hazards” response team, mitigating aircraft, fire, medical, technical rescue, and hazardous materials incidents. In 2012, BWI Fire Rescue units responded to over 2,500 calls for service.
The IAFF Local 1742 also supports local and national organizations and charities, regularly raising and donating funds and time to assist those in need within the IAFF and in our surrounding communities. Below are some of the programs and charities we support:
- Muscular Dystrophy Association
- IAFF Disaster Relief Fund
- IAFF & Anne Arundel Burn Foundations
- Take Back Our Streets (Toy drive for Anne Arundel Families in need)
- Get Um Balls (Toy Drive for the Woodbourne Center)
- Anne Arundel Medical Center Breast Cancer Research
- Honor Flights (World War II Veteran trips to Baltimore/DC)
- Anne Arundel Alarmers Association
Our members come from many different areas and all walks of life, but come together to form one union, not only supporting each other, but also the visitors and employees of BWI Airport and the residents and workers in our immediate area outside the gates.
